 Abstract

Client shame occurs in every corner of a mental health professional’s office. Shame is a foundational emotional experience in many clinical issues and disorders. It is essential, then, for psychologists and other licensed mental health professionals to be sensitized to shame-prone client stories and choose effective strategies and techniques to promote healing. This workshop will discuss the difference between guilt and shame, healthy vs. unhealthy shame, the neurobiology of shame, and the process and strategies for treating shame.

Learning Objectives

Participants will:

  1. Recognize the “faces” of shame in a clinical setting by psychologists and other licensed mental health professionals
  2. Identify shame and recognize these themes in the client’s communication
  3. Develop practical strategies and techniques to help shame-ridden clients
