Jennifer Cisney Ellers, M.A., is a professional counselor, life coach, crisis response trainer, author, and speaker. She speaks extensively and provides training, counseling, and coaching in the field of grief, crisis, and trauma through the Institute for Compassionate Care. Jennifer is an approved instructor for the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation, teaching several CISM courses. In addition, she serves on the Executive Board and as Director of the Grief, Crisisand Disaster Network of the American Association of Christian Counselors and Clinical Director for the Crisis Response Team of the United States Concealed Carry Association. Jennifer is the co-author of The First 48 Hours: Spiritual Caregivers as First RespondersSpiritual and Psychological First Aid, and Understanding Suicide: Effective Tools for Prevention, Intervention and Survivor Support. 

 

Summary 

Trauma is a widely discussed topic in mental health and is linked to many other issues, such as addiction, depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. It is critical for mental health professionals to have an understanding of the human response to trauma. Also important is the need for a wide range of helping professionals, from family physicians and pastors to teachers and first responders, to be traumainformed. This Webinar will review the neurobiology of the human stress response and how critical events can lead to the development of trauma disorders in some individuals. It will also address treatment recommendations and building resilience for individuals who develop trauma and stress-related disorders. 

 

Learning Objectives 

Participants will: 

  1. Discuss the neurobiology of the human stress response and the factors that create a trauma response for humans. 
  2. Review a normal stress response and the criteria for Acute Stress Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Complex PTSD. 
  3. Examine those most at risk for PTSD and Complex PTSD. 
  4. Identify best practices for intervention and social and spiritual support for those who have experienced traumatic events.
