Chap Clark (M.A., M.Div., Fuller Theological Seminary, Ph.D., University of Denver) is the lead pastor at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Newport Beach, California. Through March 2018, Chap has served as chair of the Christian Discipleship department and professor of Practical Theology and Youth, Family, and Culture at Fuller Theological Seminary. In addition, for seven years, Chap was also Vice Provost at Fuller in charge of regional campuses and strategic initiatives. He has been the senior editor of YouthWorker Journal, a pastor, a Sojourner contributing writer, and “Red Letter Communicator.” Chap is currently president of ParenTeen,™ a nonprofit organization helping adults understand and respond to the developmental and spiritual needs of adolescents and emerging adults. He is a speaker, trainer, consultant, and the author or co-author of 25 books, including the award-winning Hurt 2.0: Inside the World of Today’s Teenagers, Sticky Faith, Deep Justice in a Broken World, and the 2016 and 2018, respectively, ECPA Book of the Year finalist for “Ministry Resources” for Adoptive Youth Ministry: Integrating Emerging Generations into the Family of Faith and Adoptive Church: Creating an Environment Where Emerging Generations Belong (both Baker Academic). 

Summary  

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among children, adolescents, and young adults (AYA). Suicide rates in the United States have increased about 33% from 1999 to 2019. While they have not risen significantly since COVID-19, a nationwide increase in depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, and attempts followed the spread of the virus in the United States. In addition, although the number of suicides has not considerably increased, outreach to suicide crisis services has spiked, suggesting an increase in this vulnerable population’s level of psychological distress. This Webinar presents the latest research on the factors contributing to pre-COVID suicidality, the potential impact of the virus on child and AYA suicidality, and intervention and preventative strategies.  

Learning Objectives 

Participants will:  

1. Recognize key psychological factors that lead to child and AYA suicide 

1. Identify how COVID-19 has impacted child and AYA vulnerability to suicidality 

1. Create contextual and clinical strategies for various modes of helping those who are at greater risk of suicidality
