The room was packed. It was full of experienced helpers—really, of shellshocked and tough-minded New York counselors, pastors, and emergency workers who had been living with 9-11 and its aftermath for over a month. In 40 days they had seen, smelled, tasted, and soaked in more death than most of us will in a 40-year career. We at AACC had collected some of our best therapists, grief workers, crisis interventionists, and pastors from all over the country to join us in New York City in October 2001 and intensively train nearly 1,500 Christian leaders who were helping people deal with the overwhelming death and trauma.
