Mission and Goals
The BCSFN exists to equip lay spiritual friends, pastors, professional Christian counselors, students, and educators to relate God’s truth to daily life. This goal requires the development of a comprehensive biblical theology of the spiritual life that provides the foundation for relevant biblical methodologies of spiritual growth. We are dedicated to encouraging the Christian community to meaningfully, powerfully, and confidently address the needs of people in the great tradition of biblical soul care and spiritual direction. We will engage in efforts to:
- Educate: We will seek to educate our members by providing cutting edge insight into biblical counseling theory, spiritual formation practice, biblical models of change, and the theory and practice of our historical Christian predecessors and of current biblical thinkers and practitioners.
- Equip: We will seek to equip our members with the tools to develop a spiritual theology—the ability to search the Scriptures to develop comprehensive biblical models on life issues faced by clients, parishioners, and spiritual friends.
- Empower: We will seek to empower our members to learn and practice the historic soul physician arts of spiritual friendship, soul care, and spiritual direction so that they can lead others to experience higher levels of spiritual formation.
- Enable: We will seek to enable our members to experience growth in godliness and grace and encourage them as they help others to use God’s Word to become more like Christ.
- Encourage: We will seek to encourage our members through connecting them with like-minded members to whom they can turn for support. We will also connect them with other worldwide Evangelical ministries that have a passion for biblical counseling and spiritual formation.
- Enlighten: We will seek to enlighten our members with the truth that God’s Word is sufficient for life and godliness. While recognizing the validity and usefulness of scientific research, we hold to the sufficiency, authority, and primacy of scriptural truth. We will encourage research and theory building on a biblical theological foundation that serves as the unifying grid through which we view and evaluate all counseling approaches.
