The pressures on kids today are tremendous. Add to that parental expectations and protection and it becomes clear why childhood stress is showing itself to be an epidemic. Arch guides families into ways to de-stress kids (and parents) and rediscover the fun and joy of family life all over again.

CHAD 102: Childhood Development: An Attachment Perspective

Presented by Gary Sibcy, Ph.D.

Attachment theory emphasizes the emotional closeness of parents to their children and is proving an excellent framework for understanding child and adolescent development. Gary is an expert in this arena and teaches us how to create parent-child bonds that are anchored in safety and security.

CHAD 103: Brain Development: The Neurobiology of Youth

Presented by Daniel Amen, M.D.

Dr. Amen’s profound challenge to concerned parents is, “Your child’s brain is developing normally, even when they behave as if they are brain-dead!” A pioneer in brain imaging and assessment, he will guide us all on a tour of exciting new developments in brain science that will reveal so many answers to the questions of why children and youth act they way they do.

CHAD 106: What Modern Kids Believe

Presented by Chap Clark, Ph.D.

If you thought you knew what your kids believed and how they think—hold on to your seats! Chap takes us on a revealing ride into the mind of (post)modern youth, where statements like, “I believe in Jesus” or “I’m not having sex yet” doesn’t necessarily mean the same thing it did (or does) to mom and dad.

CHAD 201: Emotional Coaching with Kids

One of the major tasks of family life is emotional regulation—teaching your kids how to manage their anger, overcome their fears (and on occasion, respect them), and engage in grief and sorrow without being overwhelmed. Gary shows how emotion coaching emphasizes the best of our own emotional modeling and minimizes the worst, for the benefit of our kids living in an adult world.

CHAD 202: Family Systems: Understanding and Breaking Generational Patterns

Presented by David Stoop, Ph.D.

When the Scriptures talk of the “sins of the fathers, unto the third and fourth generation,” it speaks of the pattern of receiving the spiritual and emotional heritage of the families that preceded us, for both good and ill. David reveals these mysteries and shows us how to assess and break those generational patterns that hurt us the most.

CHAD 203: Preparing for Adolescence

For all the horror stories about teen life in healthy families, it is largely a wonderful time and a great rite of passage into the adult world. With humor and grace, Chap helps us all—both parents and pre-teens—get ready for, and enjoy, this inevitable stage of living.

CHAD 204: Parenting with Love and Grace

Presented by Mark Crawford, Ph.D.

Though all parents talk about love, only some are able to actually do love when raising their kids. Mark shows the difference between healthy families that operate on love and grace and those that are legalistic, harsh, and sources of pain — unattractive to all kids in the neighborhood.

Alongside emotional regulation, teaching our children about sex and sexuality is another major family task—one made all the more difficult by our sex-saturated culture. Mark reveals the core lessons of biblical sexuality and how to best teach and model these to our children.

Education research is revealing that a child’s learning style may be as unique as his or her personality. And nothing is more stressful in families than a learning disability in an otherwise smart kid that isn’t properly diagnosed or helped. Cynthia shows us how to understand and respect both as we travel on the journey of teaching and learning with our children.

CHAD 301: The Epidemic of Child Abuse

Presented by Diane Langberg, Ph.D.

Abuse comes in many forms—it is emotional, as well as physical or sexual. And emotional, sexual and physical abuse yield a wide range of emotional, physical and spiritual problems—it is the genesis of lifelong suffering that most counselors see at the root of 25-50% of all their cases. Diane gives a tour of this dark world, and shows us how to respond with love and grace.

CHAD 302: Preventing Child Abuse

Presented by Basyle ‘Boz’ Tchividjian, J.D.

In the realm of child abuse, considering the lifelong suffering it produces, nothing else rings more true than to assert that the best treatment is to prevent it altogether. Boz details the very best prevention strategies for home and church in this all-too-common source of trouble.

When people become so frustrated and battered by life that it leads to substance abuse to ease their pain, it’s a terrible thing. Think how much more disturbing it is when when a child enters this dark world. What causes a child to become addicted to drugs and alcohol?

CHAD 304: Grief and Loss in Childhood

Presented by H. Norman Wright, M.A., LMFT

Children experience loss and grieve in some unique ways—in response to a death in the family, when parent’s divorce, when they simply don’t make the team, Norm discusses childhood loss, how kids experience grief, and how best to respond and help your child work through it.

CHAD 305: Depression in Children and Adolescents

Presented by Catherine Hart Weber, Ph.D.

Yes, kids get depressed too. And they experience and express it in ways both similar to and different from adults. Catherine discusses this crucial topic, how to know and understand the signals of childhood depression, and what to do about it as a parent and adult.

CHAD 306: Anxiety in Children and Teens

Presented by Mark Crawford, Ph.D.

Childhood anxiety—and the myriad forms of fears, phobias, panics, and imaginations that children express—is a universal experience. Distinguishing fears that are common and fears that need or suggest intervention is a key lesson that Mark delivers in this lesson.

CHAD 401: Angry, Defiant, and Violent Kids

CHAD 404: The Unique Challenges of Raising Boys

Presented by Gary Oliver, Ph.D.

Many people are confused today about what it means to “Let boys be boys.” After a generation of attempted imposition of a unisex culture by feminists and other radical social engineers, the differences between boys and girls remain stubbornly strong. Gary and Carrie reveal the joys, frustrations and fun of raising three sons, and why they would do it again.

CHAD 405: The Unique Challenges of Raising Girls

Presented by Linda Mintle, Ph.D.

The delight of raising boys is only matched by that of raising girls. How to raise healthy, holy, and slightly wary girls in a culture that is still not altogether girl-friendly is the topic that Linda addresses with grace and aplomb in this lesson.

CHAD 406: Sex and the Youth Culture

The age when kids are having sex is dropping every year as our society becomes more and more lenient in our sexual expressions. Exposed to the media via movies and TV, our children are constantly being bombarded with sexual images. New definitions of what sex is and what it isn’t, coupled with what defines a virgin, and our children are completely confused as to their understanding of sex. Parents need to take a more active role in helping their children define what sex is from a biblical perspective. This lesson will help us know what our children are exposed to and how to combat the influence of today’s sexual revolution.

CHAD 501: Effective Discipline Strategies

Presented by Tim Clinton, Ed.D., LMFT and Gary Sibcy, Ph.D.

Effective child discipline—discipline that raises healthy and happy kids—is an expression of that old adage regarding “tough love.” Tim and Gary show parents, teachers, and others how to strike and maintain that delicate balance between smothering control and out-of-control permissiveness.

CHAD 502: Connecting with Kids Through the World of Play

Presented by Daniel Sweeney, Ph.D. and Linda Homeyer, Ph.D.

Play is the language of children, and play therapy is the therapy of choice for children suffering from a wide range of disorders that block normal communication processes. Dan shows us that when you can’t connect any other way, play is the currency that can make that connection possible.

What is the proper role of psychotropic medications in the lives of children and adolescents? Should drugs be used at all? Many kids are more Internet knowledgeable than their parents, yet have no ability to discern the sexual predators who are all over the tens of thousands of chat rooms available to kids today. Donna helps us find ways to join our children’s web-savvy behavior for their own good.

CHAD 505: Too Small to Ignore

Presented by Wess Stafford, Ph.D.

Wess reminds us anew that today’s children are tomorrow’s world. Yet today’s children are at risk like never before in history—from poverty, malnutrition, war, abuse, and neglect of all kinds. Wess reminds us of Jesus’ love for the little children—how we ignore them to our own peril—and how children desperately need caring advocates in an uncaring world.

CHAD 506: Legal and Ethical Issues in Children’s Work

Presented by George Ohlschlager, J.D. and Mark Shadoan, Ed.D., LCSW

What should be done when faced with a case of child abuse, family violence, a runaway teen, or a lost child? These and other critical legal/ethical issues are effectively addressed by George and Troy in this necessary DVD for all child workers.

Q. Is this program flexible enough to fit my busy schedule?

A. Definitely. Light University is the epitome of flexibility, allowing you to design any schedule that is convenient for you. There is no deadline in which you must be finished with your coursework. You can study when and where you like and take as long as you like to complete your lessons.

Q. Is residency required for me to complete my program of study?

A. No. The entire course of study is on DVD for your convenience. You can view and review your lessons as often as you like. It is that simple. The DVD’s, along with the complete study guides, will lead you each step of the way.

Q. Will I receive a certificate when I am finished with my program of study?

A. Yes. You will receive a beautiful certificate from Light University signifying the completion of the entire program of study. Your certificate does not, however, certify you to counsel. That would be the decision of your local church pastor or counseling minister.

Q. Will I receive ongoing support and encouragement from the AACC once I have completed my studies?
