Member Spotlight: 50 Years as a Christian Counselor

I was deeply moved by a letter I received recently from Ben Jones, LPC, a Christian counselor and AACC Charter Member:

“I want to thank you for the years of service you have given to AACC. After over 50 years of counseling, I have decided that at 82 it is time to finally retire. I will continue to assist families when called upon, but will not retain my office. Beginning next month, I will conduct a grief recovery group at the congregation where I attend.

My wife of 63 years needs my attention and it will be a pleasure to assist her.

I have been proud to be a member of AACC over the years. It is exciting to have been a member of a faith-oriented organization. It is my hope and prayer that AACC will continue to hold up our Lord in the pursuit of excellence in counseling.”

This member’s passion and faithfulness as a Christian caregiver challenges me, and I thank God for the example he sets for us all.

His life work serves as a powerful reminder that our work matters. In the midst of emotional drain, endless case notes, and missed appointments, it’s easy to lose sight of this. You are the hands and feet of Christ, making AACC’s vision a reality—to offer Christ-centered, clinically excellent counseling and psychotherapy to those who need it most. Every time you sit across from a client, every time you listen, empathize and walk with another person, you make a difference.

Together, we can do even more. Community, encouragement and continued training are needed in order to stay abreast with the latest updates and challenges in the field. Our desire is to equip you, both professionally and spiritually, to be on the “leading edge.” We are committed to continually investigating and developing the best possible resources to help increase your effectiveness in counseling and ministry. Consistently, we hear from many members asking for ongoing training, encouragement and community.

As we look toward the future, I’m asking each one of our members to join us at AACC in taking an honest inventory of everything we do—personally and professionally. What drives you? What are you living for? Who are you investing in? Where do you need a change of heart or readjustment of your priorities? The psalmist said, “Teach us to number our days aright that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Ps. 90:12).

There is no greater tragedy than “to succeed in things that don’t matter.” As an organization, we are continually working to further anchor ourselves both biblically and clinically, and to disseminate that information in pragmatic, applicable ways. We are also working to expand our knowledge and research base around prevalent counseling issues with the goal of striving more fully toward biblically based, empirically supported interventions.

We want to pass on a robust, rich legacy of care giving to the next generation that incorporates theological, psychological, biological, and relational aspects. Our commitment is to equip people helpers to offer highly effective change strategies that increase client satisfaction and positive therapeutic outcomes, ultimately leading clients to know Christ more deeply.

Through these endeavors, our desire is three-fold:

  1. To equip you in your work and ministry.
  2. To be used of God to bring hope and healing to those who need it most.
  3. To continue to solidify the foundation of Christian counseling for future generations.

Thank you for joining with us in the work of Christian care giving. May each of us live in such a way that we, too, have the testimony of Mr. Jones when we hear our Lord say, “Well done good and faithful servant!”
