Shooting at the Family Research Council

Breaking News from Washington, D.C.
Laura Captari

We at the American Association of Christian Counselors are very saddened to hear about the shooting today at the Family Research Council national headquarters. The Washington Examiner reports:

A man walked into the lobby at about 10:45 a.m. and was confronted by the security guard as per the organization’s policy, D.C. police Chief Cathy Lanier said. “The man opened fire, and the guard was hit in the arm before he and other security guards tackled the shooter,” Lanier said.

The Family Research Council (FRC) is on the frontlines of supporting biblical and family values that are under attack in today’s culture. The AACC greatly values FRC’s research, influence and public voice, standing for the truths of Scripture. Please join us in praying for the FRC staff, the victim and his family, and the investigators working on the case.

President Tony Perkins joined us just a few months ago at our 2012 Marriage America Conference in Orlando. Here’s an excerpt of his stirring speech, Standing Together for America’s Families: How Your Work Matters:

Families matter, not just because God created marriage as a sacred institution, but also because thriving marriages and healthy families are the cornerstone of society. The hard data all demonstrate that strong families mean better education, greater prosperity, and a more vibrant economy.

In the face of immense brokenness in American families, counselors, pastors, and ministry leaders are on the front lines of hope for change. How do we break the cycle of broken families and reverse the trend of negative societal and emotional outcomes?

Some public policies can help, however we cannot transform our culture from the top down. Washington, D.C. does have not all the answers, you do.

Change and healing happens in relationships. When you help couples in crisis and empower families to navigate the challenges of life, you are changing the face of our culture. As a pastor or counselor, your work matters immensely. You are on the front lines of fighting the culture war to create strong marriages and families.

We pray these words are an encouragement to you as you continue to take a bold stand for marriages and families in your work as a Christian counselor, coach or caregiver!
